Nia Technique

Nia classes are delivered by licensed Nia teachers at the Huntsbury Community Centre on Tuesday evenings at 6pm and Saturday mornings at 9.30am.

The Nia Technique is a unique and scientifically-based fusion fitness practice – combining movements and concepts from martial arts, dance arts and healing arts. Balancing accessible structure with free-form expression, Nia harnesses diverse music and wellness-inducing energies to create an exercise experience that is at once functionally wise, interconnective and hugely fun. Routines are rigorously fashioned to honour the natural design of the body which is best guided by the sensation of pleasure rather than pain or strain.

Class participants are invited to move barefoot at their own level of intensity, adapting the 52 Moves of Nia to their personal physical/emotional/cerebral potential at any given moment. No previous experience of any sort is necessary. While delivering cardiovascular, whole-body conditioning, Nia engenders a powerfully attuned relationship with one’s own body by tapping into its innate intelligence – that which seeks an overall state of dynamic ease.

Consequently, Nia is appropriate for all ages/body types/fitness levels – from athletes, dancers and fitness instructors, to children, special needs groups and the elderly. With the philosophy, Through Movement We Find Health, Nia’s body-centred practice can also be applied to living life itself wholistically. This wider dimension of body/mind/spirit livelihood training is available to anyone, and deeply studied by Nia teachers.
